We aim to promote, encourage and support breastfeeding in Whitby and the surrounding area |
Whitby Breast Start is a voluntary peer support organisation offering mother-to-mother support and information to breastfeeding mothers and mothers-to-be.
Breastfeeding Support is available in a range of ways, including ante-natal workshops, hospital/home visiting (when possible), drop-in groups, by email and over the phone. All our services are free of charge.
We also run training courses for local mothers to train as breastfeeding peer supporters in order to provide practical breastfeeding support and accurate information.
The group is run by a committee, new members, interested in supporting our work, are always welcome!
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding and would like breastfeeding support or information, feel free to come to one of our friendly and informal drop-in groups.
Our ante-natal workshops have been created by mums, for mums and are designed to complement the existing ante-natal classes offered by the NHS.
These are mums who have recently breastfed who undergo training to enable them to support other mothers who wish to breastfeed. The training covers areas such as counselling and listening skills, how breastfeeding works and how to tackle breastfeeding problems.
After completing their training, Peer Supporters build on these skills by working in the community under supervision for a few months then going on to work alone. Peer supporters can offer you support, guidance, provide you with breastfeeding information and help you access further help if it is needed.
All Peer Supporters are CRB checked.
If you have breastfed, and would like to get involved and become a peer supporter, please contact us.
Whitby Breast Start is entirely funded by charitable grants and the goodwill of people wishing to support us.
We would like to thank some of our sponsors:
